4 Top Tips for Organizing
Empty the entire room
Yes, empty every cabinet, drawer, dresser, etc. Once everything is out in the open you can easily pile like items into categories. Make sure that you have EVERYTHING that belongs in that room out in the open, even things that might be in other rooms.
For example: Imagine you decide to organize your closet, you pull everything out and categorize it. Then you carefully choose where each category will go in your closet. Ahh! The space is gorgeous! But… you forgot about the laundry sitting in the dryer, oh and there’s a dresser stuffed with sweaters and socks in the corner. The space you allocated for your sweaters in your closet cannot fit a single extra one. Frustrated you leave the dresser the way it is and when you put that laundry in the dryer away it ends up in a pile in the corner of your closet.
If at the start of your project you did a thorough search of every space in your home for your clothes, things would have gone very differently. Perhaps you would have chosen a different spot for your sweaters in the closet. Or maybe you would have chosen to donate some yoga pants because you realized how many you have.
Think Vertical
Standing things vertically really makes the best use of small spaces. Fold your clothing, dish towels, washcloths so that they stand up vertically. Then you can put them in drawers like files. This makes it so each item is visible, now clothing will get used more evenly and items won’t get lost in the bottom of drawers. This tip doesn’t just apply to fabric however. Use products such as a pot lid organizer to file your cutting boards, tupperware lids, anything really!
Labels
This may seem like a lot of work just to make things look uniform and pretty. Labels serve a greater purpose than just looking nice, especially if you do not live alone. It is hard to expect your family to know where to find things or where to put them back without labels, especially if the bins or boxes you are using are not clear. This leads me to my next tip.
Clear Bins
I love clear bins! There is a time and a place for pretty baskets and fabric bins, but when it comes to most enclosed spaces in your home clear bins are the way to go, particularly in the kitchen. Have you ever looked in your cabinet to find that you have 6 boxes of penne? Or 3 paprikas? Clear containers can help us quickly visualize what we need, saving time and money!!
