Organize Your Closet In 10 Steps
When it comes to decluttering your clothing I love to use the KonMari method with my clients. In her book she asks you to switch your perspective, rather than looking for what you can get rid of look for what “sparks joy”. This way you are being intentional with what you choose to keep and at the end of the process surrounded by items that you love. Some struggle to let go because of excessive guilt, whether that be because of the money they spent on the items or because they at one time had a sentimental attachment to the clothing. The KonMari method focuses on being grateful for what the clothing had done for you in the past and allowing them to serve someone else now. Follow these 10 steps to get yourself the closet of your dreams:
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Visualize the space you hope to achieve. Think about how an organized closet will benefit your life.
Pull every item out of the closet, you want to look at the closet as a clean slate.
Place items into piles that are categorized: socks, t-shirts, dresses, etc.
Go through each pile systematically, start with something easy like socks to get you started.
Look for clothing that is worn or damaged, these are easiest to part with first.
Hold each item and really think about if the item is useful to you or if it “sparks joy”
Decide if you will fold or hang your category of clothing. Keep in mind if you hate folding you may want to hang as much as possible. If you do not have the space to hang as much clothing as you would prefer, folding is a great option for items such as t-shirts, jeans, pajamas and many other items.
Think about your routine in getting ready and what spaces would be best utilized for a category to help getting dressed each day be the most efficient.
When it comes to items in drawers, file folding is the best option to be able to see everything and to be able to pull one piece out without destroying your precious folding.
This is not a absolutely necessary step but should you choose you can place your items in rainbow order. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider it: it is helpful to find a specific piece of clothing, but it also doesn’t hurt that it looks pretty either! Having it look pretty can help motivate you to keep it looking nice as well.
