You Won’t Get Organized Buying Containers
You’re scrolling through Instagram seeing all these beautifully organized homes and you begin to notice that something they all have in common is baskets, bins and labels. So you pull up Google on your phone and begin ordering, your cart is full of everything you need to get organized you hit order and the next day its there on your doorstep! But now weeks go by and the organizing products you have ordered have turned into more clutter in your house and you are not even sure where to put all these bins and baskets. Where did you go wrong?
Organizing is a multistep process and in my personal opinion picking out the bins and baskets is the best part! So no wonder you wanted to skip ahead to this step. Organizing really begins with decluttering, sorting, categorizing and then measuring to ensure you buy the correct products for the job. So next time you find yourself strolling through The Container Store or the home aisles of Target, remember that there are a few steps you need to take before purchasing those containers!
Step 1. Look through each item in the space and decide if you truly love it or need it. Donate or throw away anything that no longer is serving you, because guess what? If it’s not serving you, it is taking from you. Taking from your space, from your mental capacity and your time.
Step 2. Ok now that you have everything that you truly need its time to decide how you want to categorize. Try broad categories, if you get too specific you will have a lot of items that may fall into multiple categories and this could cause you to freeze in your progress.
Step 3. Measure. Measure the width, depth, and length of each shelf. Look for obstructions like door hinges that could limit the size of the containers you need.
Step 4. Shopping! Now that you are equipped with all the information you need you can do the fun part! Think about the categories you have created and what bins/baskets will best suit those needs.
