3 Steps To Organize Your Refrigerator

Refrigerators have the tendency to become a wasteland of terrifyingly old leftovers, mostly empty condiments and shriveled spring mix (or is this just me?). Refrigerators are one of those spaces that need regular organizing maintenance, unfortunately those beautifully organized refrigerators that you see on Pinterest or home organizing shows probably only last the week before they get reset. The reason they are hard to keep organized is they are getting used constantly, and by all the members of the family. That doesn’t mean it is pointless to organize your fridge however, having systems in place can help to save you headaches when making dinner and money (buying things you already had). Here are the 3 things you need to do to get those systems in place!

  1. Empty It Out & Check Expiration Dates

Pull out every single thing from the refrigerator. While you are taking out the condiments and beverages, check their expiration dates. When in doubt, throw it out! This goes for leftovers too and the soggy spring mix. Seriously? Am I the only one that buys this just to rot in my fridge?

Now is also a good time to give that fridge a good wipe down.

2. Sort

Put the items into categories to help you visualize how much you have as well as where items will go in the fridge. Here are some examples of categories that will help you to sort your items:

  • Beverages

  • Condiments

  • Deli

  • Leftovers

  • Vegetables

3. Put Everything Away

Now it is time to put into action your plan. You don’t need to purchase product to have an organized fridge (although it does make it esthetically pleasing and can certainly help). If you are not purchasing product to store items then you need to make sure that each space of the fridge is dedicated to a specific zone.

Now that you have your beautifully organized fridge take a step back and enjoy your handy-work. Try not to get too disappointed when the refrigerator needs a reset, it will be much easier to keep it organized now that you have your systems in place.
