What Does It Really Mean To Be Organized?

Being organized for some seems like a superpower that is only attainable by falling into a vat of chemical organizing product waste (cue superhero music) and coming out dressed in tights and cape. The truth is being organized can look very different for each individual. Put simply what being organized means having systems in place that make your day to day easier. Here are 3 tips that will simplify the process of getting systems into place.

  1. Minimize the number of items in your home. Our spaces can only handle so many things before it starts to feel cluttered. Every item should have a “home” a place where it belongs. If an item does not have a place then maybe it has outlived it’s use and can be rid of guilt-free.

  2. Think about your routine. Ask yourself: When getting ready for the day, where do I run into the most frustration? Maybe it is looking for your keys or gathering your kid’s homework. After identifying the problem areas in your day to day routine think of solutions. Could you put a hanging folder by the door for finished homework and next to that a hook for your keys. The next step is to implement the new step to your routine, make a habit of putting your keys on the ring as soon as you walk in the door. Before bed ask your kids if they put their homework into the folder.

  3. Enlist help. Your newly placed systems will only be possible if the whole household is on board with keeping them. Explain to your family the benefits that will come from being organized and ask them to help you keep them in place. This will mean making the systems easy and perhaps even using labels to help your family find the homes for their items. It wont come overnight so be patient with yourself and with your family, but stick with it and you will see good results!
